His philosophy:
"To me there is nothing more honest than music. The minute you pick up that instrument, if you are not honest, the phoniness will come through. I can play it all, but I prefer jazz because the essence of jazz is improvisation. When you play jazz you recompose. You have it all inside and it has to come out. The spirit has to flee. To where does it flee? It comes from inside and never dies. It keeps going until it reaches the creator of all spirituality. The technique serves only one purpose and that is to fulfill the imagination. That's the beauty of jazz"
